Seasonal job offer checklist

Hiring picks up from late October through December, and fake offers copy it. Record what the recruiter asked for and what you have verified yourself. Get the actions to stop on, the evidence still missing and questions to send.

Before you say yes

  • Employer found by me
  • Number I found myself
  • Same role on their careers page
  • Offer in writing
  • No money asked for

Seven questions about the offer

Answer what you know. Leave the rest blank; blanks show up as evidence still missing.

Your answers and notes stay in this tab’s memory. Closing the tab or choosing Clear everything removes them. Leave out account numbers and document numbers.

What you checked, when and what you found. Keep the numbers out.

What each answer looks at

Each request you tick maps to a source-backed action. Nothing is scored.

  • Contact method. Texts, chats and webmail are channels honest employers use too, so they only prompt a check. An offer you never applied for is flagged. [FTC guide]
  • Checks you did yourself. Only checks that did not rely on contact details from the offer count as evidence. [FTC alert]
  • Interview format. A call or meeting with a named person is evidence. A chat thread or an offer within hours is flagged. [FTC alert]
  • Payments and equipment. Fees, check deposits, purchases you fund and deposits to unlock pay each trigger a stop. [FTC guide]
  • Parcel handling. Receiving and forwarding packages triggers a stop. [FTC guide]
  • Documents. Photo ID, ID numbers and bank details wait until you have verified the employer yourself. [FTC alert]
  • Promised earnings. Large pay for little effort, and pay per task, send you to ask for written terms. [FTC guide]

The rule

Never pay to get a job.

[FTC alert]

If you already paid or shared details

  • Act immediately. Contact the company you used to send the money, report the fraud and ask for a reversal. This applies to a card, payment app, wire transfer, gift card, cash reload card or cryptocurrency. [FTC guide]
  • If you shared personal information, you may face identity theft. The FTC’s job-scams advice links to its identity theft guidance. [FTC guide]
  • Report the job scam at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and you can also file a complaint with your state attorney general. [FTC guide]
  • Read the longer walk-through in the holiday job offer red flags guide.
